Hi All,

I am new to this form and looking for a solution for my problem. I have the Kawasaki Ninja 300 where my underbelly is scraping on small speed breakers. I tried increasing the suspension hight however its of no use. I am worried that it might damage the engine oil seal and my exhaust underneath the bike if I keep on doing it. It is painful to see the bike scrap on every other speedbreakers.

Has anyone came across this issue? If yes how did you resolve it?

The bike is all stock and you bought it brand new? Or maybe a previous owner did suspension changes?
Yes, its a brand new 2022 Kawasaki Ninja 300 :)

How much do you weight?

I weigh around 87Kg/187 Pounds

What did you do to increase the suspension height?

I used the below suspension link

As Sparky said, to raise the bike, on the rear, you can change the suspension links.
Yes maybe you can help me with this i have a few questions in regards to this:

1)Will the suspension link affect the handling of the bike?
2)Is there a way to make the bike more ergonomic after the suspension link change?

i have tried the above suspension link which is designed to increase the ground clearance, however it impacted the ride ergonomics; severely. The stock link was a bit more relaxed and could be used for long distance riding. But as soon as i changed to the above mentioned suspension link my hands and shoulders starts to ache even on a 15 mins ride.I am yet to test the bike extensively with this link even handling was a bit of a concern for me as i don't know how the bike will react after the change. So i switched back to the stock as it was affecting the ride ergonomics and my newbie senses were telling me to go back to stock!

Maybe increasing it to 170mm is a bit of an overkill, how can i select the right suspension link which doesn't affect the ride quality and ergonomics of the bike?

On the front, you can slide the forks tubes down into the triple tree.

I didn't know that, Does sliding the fork tubes down decrease or increase the ride height of the bike? does it affect the handling? Can you tell me how to do this please? If i could increase the height on the front along with the back suspension link change maybe it will help with the ride ergonomics.

I am sorry if the above sounds stupid, I am a newbie and I don't know much about the mechanics of the above.

I am inclined to believe one of two things;

  • your bike has an actual problem of sorts
  • or you are trying to ride over massive speed bumps that might bottom out most bikes

Something like a Ninja 300 should have no trouble running over 99% of speed bumps. It is not a hardcore race bike, it should have plenty of ground clearance for 99% of riders in 99% of conditions. And on top of that, you're only 187lbs, this is totally reasonable and there should be no issues in regards to your bike's suspension.

Going in and changing linkages, fork tube height, or anything else is risky if you are not very much so in tune with the trade-offs that happen when you make these changes. Handling and ergonomics will be affected, and if you are not ready for all those changes, they may be unwelcome changes.

I think after seeing your updates on this issue that you should see if the shock and fork springs are the correct rate for your weight, or if there is any malfunctions with the shock or forks. I am 150lbs, and the stock fork and shock springs are just adequate for me, at a medium/advanced track pace. But I have maxed out the preload on the rear shock, and I think everyone should do that if you have the stock shock.

Make sure your suspension isn't binding. If it is binding, then it may 'stick' and be stuck down low like you are experiencing. I have experienced this, it happened to my 300 because the grease in my lower suspension pivots had entirely dried up and began seizing. It made my rear end not re-extend.

All this to say, I would make sure you are 110% sure absolutely nothing is wrong with your suspension before deciding to leave the raising link on the bike. Raising the front or rear end with modifications or aftermarket parts I think would be a band-aid over the real problem.

I think there is some missing info here. Pull the bodywork off the bike and take a look, and if you have the tools, take the shock out and make sure all the swingarm pivot points move buttery smooth with no resistance without the shock in the bike.

Well i am not that mechanically sound about the bikes. So removing all those side panels and fairings will be easy but i doubt i will be able to put it back together. So i cannot risk it. This is my very first bike and i am still taking baby steps, however, when this issue started i had gone back to the dealer several times stating this issue and they told several complains have come up in regards to this. They done something to the suspension which helped a bit as prior to that my bike was scrapping on every speed breakers out there, now it only scraps every other speed breakers.

Its a new machine, just because of this i have to look out for a speed breaker; do a dead stop and take the bike sideways just to avoid scrapping the underbelly of the bike. This takes away the fun of riding the vehicle as i am constantly under pressure looking out for speedbreakers and traffic behind me trying to not damage my bike's or get rear ended.

The dealers as well an independent mechanic confirmed that there is no issue with the suspension and the mechanic suggested the above link for increasing the height of the suspension.

I want to ride this bike and i want to solve this issue and i don't want to sell it off just because of this. If there are any solutions i am willing to give a try. I will get the required spares and will get a mechanic to help me out with it.

But i need solutions please

Its better to give it a try find the problem, diagnose the issue and resolve it than to just give up and sell it.

It looks like the exhaust is the one touching the speed breaker, shall i try changing the exhaust?
