How to: Remove the under-seat storage tray

Wondered this afternoon if I could get rid of the storage tray from under the pillion seat, as I see no need for it and would rather have a larger storage area.

Pretty straightforward to do :)

Tray in situ

Using some pliers grab the r-clip/cotter pin and pull it out of the end of the dowel on both sides of the tray.

Slide out dowels from each side of tray

Room for more things :) In this case, water and helmet cleaner as well as the tool kit.

Might look at cutting the fins out as well to give more flexibility with the space.

Great writeup! I took my tray out the first day as well. Kills the cargo volume. I can carry quite a bit in my Ninja...wallet, phone, case for my hearing aids/earplugs, Gatorade drink pouchey-things, etc. I might also cut out the fins as-mentioned. Good idea.

What fins are you guys talking about? Pics maybe?
Under the seat are some fins that divide up the compartment. I'm considering removing the centre one.

If you take your tool kit out you'll see the divider.

The toolkit should be under that flap in a blueish/blackish type of bag. Your user manual should also be located under that flap.

If one or both are missing...........return to your dealer asap. These are basic items that dealers should be checking to ensure they are there before letting the bike leave.

Did this today!

Also cut out the middle flap on the lower compartment using my swiss army knife. Much more room!

I removed mine too on the first day I had the bike. I also Dremel'd down the central fin so my phone/wallet combo could lay flat. Tons of room in that underseat-storage area, at least, compared to other sporting motorcycles.

i dunno why i never thought of this, i'm definitely taking it off when i get home!

OK, I have finally removed the centre 'fin' from my bike, I was going to update my original post but I don't seem to be able to edit it.

I used a Stanley knife to cut down where the two pieces of plastic form the T shape. Then I took the blade out of the knife to cut along the bottom of the fin where it joins the base of the storage area.

Hey Xorro,

This method works great! I even used my Yoshimura baffle puller to pull on the Stanley blade in order to get more pulling power through the plastic. Then, when it was mostly cut-off I was able to pull the blade through like slicing cheese with my fingers.

I Dremeled the fin off before but that's slow and not as effective as the knife method.

I removed the tray from both of our bikes. The seat is still tight on one but the other does wiggle more, but I don't know whether that was looser before or not.

Having two ninjas is the garage is great for when you want to compare :)

I used Flash-Tune, so I have no piggyback unit on my bike. That's one nice advantage of a flash instead of a piggyback.

Thanks for the writeup Xorro, I removed the tray in my Ninja 300 today and I think it's great improvement. Still debating shaving the center fin.

Now for those wondering about the possibility of items falling through, yes it is possible but it would depend on the item. Here is a pic I took that shows where the gaps are.

You can just about make out the ground beside the bike seen through the center of the left red box. If I packed the trunk full of stuff, then the items closest to the top might slide into the gaps if they were small enough, but for my purposes I'm not worried. The plastic box should help contain most items really.

I did notice a very slight side to side wobble in the rear seat after the tray was removed, as compared to when the tray was installed. I think the seat is probably less prone to wobble when the tray is installed due to it resting on the tray like this:

However the wobble is hardly noticeable with the tray removed and if it bugged me I think it could probably be fixed with some weatherstripping around the bottom edge of the seat, or something similar. If I end up doing this, I'll report back.
