Tips for riders that wear glasses

6230 Views 27 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  ToNY97
Hey all,

New rider and I wear glasses. I tried on various helmets and found that I liked modular helmets since it was easier for me to put on my glasses while the chin bar was up.

I would like to get a new helmet that is snell 2010 approved and HI VIZ but most modular helmets are only DOT. I also find that my glasses bounce inside the helmet during high speeds. Could this be due to the helmet being too big or that modulars are not as tight as regular full face helmets?

Any tips from veterans that wear glasses under the helmet?

Thanks for any info!

Check out helmets by Shark; they have inserts that pull out of the cheek pads for glasses that seem to work pretty well.
Honestly, contacts will be the biggest tip I can give to you.

Glasses and active lifestyles work, but often end up requiring specialized eyewear for each sport.

Contacts let you do everything from water sports, to skydiving, to wearing your motorcycle helmet of choice (without worrying about breaking or losing glasses).

If you haven't considered making the jump to contacts before, give it some consideration.
Yeah I was thinking about contacts but I just hate things in my eyes. **** I used to wear my glasses playing ice hockey haha.

I will look at the Shark helmets. Thanks for the replies.
Modular helmets wont get Snell approved. Not unless there's some epic shift in how they're made. I tried on every helmet I could get my hands on when I picked my HJC IS-16, unfortunately it's not Snell either.

Though I was able to fit a coupe Arai helmets with my glasses just fine. Since I don't plan on going on a track DOT is still very good and because of that the $600 price tag on the Arai's I was like meh HJC.
The crazy thing for me is when I wear my contacts. It really bothers, when wind hits my eyes from the vents it drys my contacts alot that it makes it uncomfortable on the ride. The issues are when I close the vents is the visor gets foggy.

Btw has anyone had the issue about the visor getting foggy, especially in the morning?

Only when it gets cold. Even then it really has to be humid. I close all my vents n the winter. Open your visor when not moving and close it once you take off.

I do that. But even than when I'm moving it gets humid.
What kind of glasses do you wear?

I had thinner metal frames and it was difficult to put on the glasses w/o fear of bending them.

I've since switched to plastic frames and it's much easier to put the glasses on after the full-face helmet is already on.
I wear silhouettes with flexible frame. Nice and light but a little struggle getting on. Yeah I think a sturdy plastic will be a lot easier to get on.
i wear titanium frames and they work i just kind of twist them a bit. but yes that's part of the reason i'd like a new helmet tbh
I wear metal frames that have thick plastic on the arms. If they are bouncing around the helmet could be loose or you don't have them in that sweet spot. I noticed you really have to push them back and high on the nose for them to seat well. What I hate is when visor is clear but glasses fog.

get a lasik if possible, best investment I've ever done to myself.

If your glasses are bouncing around, the helmets too big.

I hate having to wear my glasses .. and it's difficult getting my glasses into my helmets, but, such is life.

I'm looking into LASIK.
There is a link on webbikeworld that describes how the author cut a small section of the stems on his glasses (part that rests on ears) and now his glasses fit so much better.

Modular is nice so that you don't have to remove glasses, put on helmet, then insert glasses.

For Modular helmets between $200-$300, are the models from Bell, Nolan, Scorpion, HJC the best choices?
Any feedback on these helmets?
What's the breakdown of people who wear glasses but still prefer full face?

If you don't wear glasses, what are reasons you would wear a modular?
I don't honestly see how a modular is so much better for glasses. The visor provides plenty of room for me.

i wear full face and glasses. i like the "badass" nature of wearing a full-face. each time i gear up it's a reminder that what i am about to do is potentially dangerous and there are serious risks involved; i.e. it's a reminder to pause and reflect "am i good to go? is the bike? if yes, then go have fun and be careful!"

I guess some people are so terribly blind that if they take off their glasses to put on their helmet, they'll end up putting it somewhere... Else... <Fog horn sound here>
