I have noticed with men's shoes versus women's; Women's shoes are narrower than the men's. Basically a regular width women's shoe (B width) is the same width as a men's narrow (B width). A women's wide (D width) is the same width as a men's regular (D width).

I think women's heels are narrower, and the arch might be located a little differently, I think. I don't really think it's an issue of finding the size to fit in mens by bumping down sizes. Overall, men's shoes just tend to fit different due to shape differences.

I have a pair of the women's Alpinestars SMX-5 boots because the white and black matched my old race suit. The only difference is that the y are 1/2" shorter than the men's boots, but I'm short so that didn't matter to me. They don't really go with my new suit so I'll get a new pair of boots in blue.
