Just picked her up all fixed from the dealer today.

After a little more than a month of organising lifts with people and sitting in traffic to and from work everyday... Makes me very happy!

Repair was fully covered by the kawasaki warranty. Dealer said it would have cost me between R20000.00 - R25000.00 otherwise. To put in perspective, the bike brand new is R59000.00 here.

The entire process understandably took a while. He had to strip the entire bike down to the open engine to find the big end bearing was worn out. We then had to file a warranty claim, once that was approved, ship in the necessary parts. After that, he put the bike all together, test ride, see that the noise was gone.

Before leaving I was told to treat it like a brand new engine, break her in again for about 500km.

Hi guys

I've been lurking for a while, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but this seems the best place to ask.

I've today got a brand new ninja 300, I've put 50 miles on it and am doing the 'variable break-in' I've read on these forums.

However, when in the higher gears around 4-5k. I get a sound similar to the video posted in this thread, I'm hoping I don't have the same issue, is this something that might ' Break-In'?

It only seems to happen when under load in the higher gears.

Thanks

I've tried holding the clutch lever firmly, unfortunately it didn't seem to make a difference. The noise appears to be coming from the back of the bike.
Check bolts. One member had a licence plate bolt that was loose and as I can imagine it made quite a noise when it started to rattle. Bolts are always a good thng to start with, check all the ones you can see. At least that eliminates that off your list of possibilities.

But seriously thread lock EVERYTHING!!!
*grin*

Please don't thread lock everything.

If you do your own servicing, you're going to be cursing up a storm, and if you let someone else do it for you, they will not thank you, and the likelihood is that you'll have to leave the bike with them for a bit while they undo your work, even for minor servicing.

Tighten up, certainly, but don't Incredible Hulk it unless you're planning never to service the bike again.

Eh.. Unless you get the really hard locking stuff, it's not a big deal. I've got the blue stiff and it comes of easy enough.. OK maybe "everything" was a bit if an exaggeration, but I thread lock a lot of stuff.. Too much vibration..

Well, I checked all the bolts I could find, everything seems fine, my license plate is on tight too.

I also held my clutch and it still rattled so I thought it was something else! Not saying yours is the clutch but can you rattle it around a lot by hand?
I can rattle it around by hand for sure. To me it sounds like it's coming from the back of the bike though, but I won't rule this out completely.

It's got me stumped, think it might mean a trip to a dealer tomorrow!

the "blue stuff" is medium loctite. its generally *WAY* too much strength for most applications anyhow

you usually want the low strength, loctite 222 the pink stuff works well

and if it is small screw like fairing screws use some of your wifes/girl friends clear nail polish;)

Squeeze a bit of grease between both sides of the brake lever and the lever bracket and wipe up any excess, tighten up the clutch cable till right on the point where the slack is gone!

Be sure you have free play or as the clutch gets hot and parts expand it will introduce slip, creating more heat, more expansion, more slip, more heat, etc. Clutch smoked in short order.
