I live in the Vegas area and lane-splitting in Nevada is currently illegal (law enforcement are exceptions); however, I ran accross an article talking about a bill being presented to the Assembly for legalizing it, and shortly into another article saying that the Assembly has passed the bill, that it will go to Senate next, and if passed, we will see riders lane-splitting in January of 2014 in Nevada! This is exciting for me!

The assembly was presented with some statistics comparing California (where lane-splitting is legal) to other similar states where it is illegal and California had on average 50% less rear-end collisions with bikes (due to being able to pull up to the front at a stop light). The bill passed with an overwhelming majority (34 yes, 4 no, 2 excused, 1 absent). Hopefully the support is just as strong in the Senate.

Bear in mind, the bill states that you may lane-split if you do it cautiously and prudently at speeds not exceeding 30mph, which is fine, I really don't need the incentive to zip between cars on freeways, but it's nice to be able to bypass traffic, especially in the Vegas heat where you don't want to be stopped for a long time!

If it became legal in FL, I still most likely won't do it because it can be quite dangerous. I rather wait behind a car than be thrown off my bike.

Filtering up at a stoplight is really, really handy. You never know if the car behind you actually noticed you. If you filter up to the line, you can be fairly certain the driver noticed you (especially you see them glowering at you, shaking their fists in frustration because they're stuck in a cage, or flipping you off haha).

I don't know. Filtering to the front of the line under *normal traffic* feels like cheating to me and I never do it. I only do it if the traffic is so bad that there's a mile long line with completely stopped traffic. Even then I'll be moving at a pace equal to power walking my bike. Entirely different story on the freeway though

That's true, I guess. I'm pretty inconsistent at lights. Stopped or slow moving freeway traffic is definitely a different story though, especially now that it's getting uncomfortably warm!

Back to the original topic, I do hope Nevada legalizes lane splitting. If drivers are annoyed at you, that means they noticed you...right? Are there helmet laws there too?

This guy got very lucky. But, just imagine if it was at a red light and you weren't lane splitting when there is traffic. Just be smart about it. I ONLY do it at red lights and heavy slow moving traffic. In this video there was a funeral procession.

Lane splitting is amazing when done properly for example today I woke up 30mins before work left the house 10 mins later got on the freeway and traffic was dead stopped I still rolled into work on time and it's two cities away almost it can be dangerous the only time I won't lane split is when there is an opening in the lane next to me cause more than likely someone is gonna try and get through to it

that's exactly what I said... I'm becoming more and more comfortable with lane splitting and sitting between cars at an intersection. Heck, I get into good conversations with others while sitting next to them (usually telling me that they love my bike =).

Of course there is the possibility of a lot of bikers not following the law the way it stated, but the way it is drafted now, it provides more safety than danger. You are not allowed to lane split above 30mph. This means the provision's really there for very slow to completely stopped traffic (and remember, if you can't go more than 30, then the guys next to you must be doing 25 at the most for lane-slitting to be beneficial enough for you to pass them). As Haksan video shows, there are a lot of drivers who don't pay attention and rear end people. That was a car; imagine if that was the guy on the bike. His legs would be smashed between the cars at the least, who knows what other injuries he would have had... If, however, you can pull up to the front at a red light, you'll have a number of cars behind you on the sides that will form a barrier of protection (and if a car smashes them so hard that all the cars fly forward, you also have the advantage of being on the side, so it is more likely the cars will fly past you rather than into you, as was the case in the video).

What I'm trying to get at is if it is currently illegal, but the state is convinced enough that it will make motorcycle riding safer and decide to legalize it, then there must be some truth to it, AS LONG AS you lane-split as described in the statute (cautiously and prudently at speeds not exceeding 30mph).

I'm confused as to why the car and the motorcycle were just sitting in the middle of the street. That little pickup must have been doing 80 around that corner to slide into them like that.

In that state when there is a funeral procession both side of the road stop to show respect for the lost one. Here in California, we usually have the police escort and block all roads/intersection regardless if it's a red light. I've seen some in California where the opposite road also pull over but some just doesn't care and keeps driving. In this video, seems like that pickup truck was either rubber necking or on the phone.

Looks to me like the car came to a full stop because he didn't know what the 2 guys on bikes (scooters) off to the side of the road ahead of him were doing, and he couldn't go wide around them because of the line of cars heading in the opposite direction.

I'd guess the driver didn't feel confident enough that there was enough room to go around, I suppose that was proved wrong once the truck came and bumped up into his under carriage.
