I'd like to add a gear indicator while my bike is naked getting painted and I thought it'd look better to just replace the whole display with a gear indicator as part of the new one. The only ones that I can find are cheap, poorly rated. Has anyone done this?

Yeah I've had bikes with and without gear indicator, and I find I don't need it after getting used to the bike. On the street, I just know that I am at 6700RPM at 60mph in 6th gear, so that prevents me from trying to keep upshifting. On track, I don't think I get to 6th gear with my final gearing, and so I just don't care.

My bike that had the gear indicator I just almost never looked at it after I got used to the bike. It was cool but not needed.

I agree with the others...once you get used to the bike there's no need for a gear indicator. I'd especially stay away from trying to install an entirely new display for the purpose of adding a gear indicator. Sounds like trouble.

OUCH no need to replace the whole display. You can buy an aftermarket LED gear indicator fairly cheap off ebay. Link below. Just mount it where you want it, run the wire back to the ECM module under the passenger seat and simply plug it in, i.e., no soldering, etc. I've been using one for years and love it. They even come in different colors. Here's a link:
