For you california riders...

I think people are so obsessed with safety to a point of ridiculousness. S**t happens and people can be idiots. I'd also like to point out that we can split the lanes and go to the front at stop lights. It seems many do not know that.

Personally I'd be fine with lane splitting to get ahead at lights, creep through stopped traffic, and at lower speeds in stop and go traffic. But splitting when traffic is already travelling at or over the speed limit does sound pretty dangerous.

In slow traffic, a car pulling out is a minor incident. But at speed it could very easily be the last thing you do....
I think one very important reason lane splitting is legal in california is because california already has a horrible traffic problem! Other states have no where near the traffic congestion california has. But don't get me wrong. Lane splitting should be legal in every state.
I think lane splitting is an accident waiting to happen.

Why is that so amazing? Bikers have enough stigmas attached to us, why do we need the arrogant jerk tag attached to it as well. I am a normal person and I ride as so, I don't feel like I have special right to jump lines. I wait my turn and follow in order. Wanna lane split to avoid getting hit by some ******* behind you, go on. But just because you can seems like a dumb reason in my honest opinion.
I gave a specific example. Are you one that feels like it is ok to do what I was talking about? 90+ when people aren't expecting you is an unsafe manner. If I move slightly in my lane traveling at that speed will send you flying. Making lane splitting illegal is a constant debate because people abuse it by doing it while speeding and splitting the lanes at a much faster speed then the flow of traffic. There is a reason it is illegal in most states. I know there are times when it is a matter of opinion, but I am talking about the times when it is absolutely absurd. I just listed what I personally feel comfortable with. When freeway traffic is going 35+ I do not split lanes, but I see nothing wrong with others doing it up to the speed limit.

I say each to their own, if you feel you must lane split and it is legal and in a safe manner by all means do it.

But I would NEVER do it personally like This Girl Rides stated I will also wait until my turn. I don't mind waiting a few seconds so I can safely get home to my family!

I lane split ('filter' for you European readers) frequently. However, I try to look at it from the cager's position and do it in what I believe is a sane way by only going 5-10MPH faster than the traffic so it gives them some time to see and hear me coming (if they're even looking/listening). That speed differential also gives me some time to react when they decide to jump lanes. I also like to flick my high-beams on during daylight hours for extra visibility in those mirrors.

Mainly I use it for getting to the light ahead of the line of cars. This narrow little Ninja is *great* for that. :D

Occasionally I've seen guys fly between lanes when I've been stuck/creeping in gridlock while commuting to work in a car and I can only shake my head and hope the worst that happens is they get a 'scare' which slows them down before they get seriously hurt. I know every rider is taking chances (yours truly included), but some people really think they're made of Adamantium.

I hate babies. and kittens with spikes! AND MILK!
I lane split but I generally don't go much faster than traffic and usually only because of traffic. Makes a huge difference with me because I tend to drive pretty long distances on the highway to do anything and traffic is usually a problem in the bay area. I'd rather not add a whole hour to a typically 2 hour drive because I hit traffic in 4 different locations.
Thats why i love california , its a big time saver to be able to go tovthe front of traffic

We don't split lanes just because we can. Traffic is extremely bad here and our bikes aren't as bad, but some literally can't sit in one spot for that long. Most of the time traffic is moving just enough to where you cant turn the bike off. Southern California does not have many detour options as well due to the landscape. In Texas i could always get off the freeway and take a regular street. You have no idea how many times I have seen a car next to me hit the car in front of them in bumper to bumper traffic. I'm not from California so just as most people will say these people can't drive(it seems like a good percentage of people on the road aren't from California lol). And icon I wasn't attacking you just answering your question. I'm not the one that draws the line between safe or not. That's all I meant by my reply. Now worried bro

this is why I will lane split. when I get rear-ended in a towtruck you can think how fast it could happen on a bike.
