I live in Cali and do it everyday, but only at slow speeds or stopped traffic... And yes, many drivers don't know it's legal, and will actually try to block you! Just gotta play it safe and only split when it's necessary, like getting out of LA traffic jams.

You still see other riders lane splitting at 80mph on the freeway though. It's not worth the risk to me.

Btw, splitting cars that are stopped at a light isn't always about "being first" off the line, I do it mainly for safety... We've all seen the youtube video of the biker being rear ended as he stopped behind a car. People can't see bikes, so I like to use other cars like my own personal 'cage' while waiting at a light.
