So, as I was gearing up to leave work on the bike, I hung my backpack on the gender hook for the helmet. Yeah, drove off with it still there. About five minutes later, the wheel locks up. My ninja (her name is Chopsticks, btw) tried to eat my bag. Is caught in the chain and wrapped around the axle. After a few minutes, I was able to free it, no damage to either myself or Chopsticks. But man, I loved that backpack. Vehicle Tire Automotive tire Alloy wheel Motor vehicle

Dude........you are super lucky.

That could have turned out much worse than it did.

I never hang anything over my bike, always on the ground next to me. That way when I ride away, a quick glance over the shoulder or in the mirrors will tell me straight away if I have forgotten something, as its clearly still sitting there on the ground.

Wow you are lucky im glad youre safe. My friends uncle recently got a scarf stuck like that and it flew him into a wall and he died on impact.

Ooo, Lordy! You were lucky no harm came to you, that's for sure! Amazing the damage that can be done from the chain, the force being driven through there is amazing. lol, poor backpack. And what is that on your seat? :) It looks like a little birdie of some sort.

Glad you are safe...the possibilities of mayhem associated with that scenario are sobering, for sure....

Reminds me of one of my earliest motorcycle memories - going to Dodger Stadium with my Dad on the Ventura Freeway 134 section just before turning south on the 5, by Griffith Park. Some guy was out riding a chopped Harley with his female companion riding pillion with her patchwork fake fur jacket tied around her waist, sleeve flapping in their windstream....

Yep, you guessed it....sleeve flapped once, twice and on the third flap got SUCKED into the chain, locking up the bike and putting them both into a WILD-ASSED fishtail about 100 feet in front of us....

My Dad (God Bless his soul and Rest In Peace, Dad) always respected motorcyclists by giving them a safety space, and fortunately did so this day...

We stood his '68 Ford Fairlane on its nose and barely avoided running 'em over...I remember both of us hollering and feeling sick to our stomachs as they disappeared from our view beneath the hood, but we stopped with about a foot to spare....

Dad immediately put his emergency flashers on and parked the car and ran out to lend aid & check on the two of them....made me stay in the car.....

NO helmets (this was the early '70's, mind you) and miraculously, no serious injuries...the pillion had a slight case of road rash on her forearm, but otherwise, everyone was fine, just SERIOUSLY shaken up....

Rider instinctively righted the bike, and thanks to Dad's immediate braking and emergency flashers (and drivers being more kind/considerate back in the day) other drivers in adjacent lanes also stopped their cars and put their flashers on, allowing Mr. Chopper to push the bike with the assistance of a couple of younger dudes in a pickup truck from two lanes over who ran over to lend aid and push the bike off the freeway....

Mr. Chopper was P I S S E D at Ms. FlappyJacket, though.....he was cussing her out the entire time....but hey, he shoulda had her do something else with the jacket....

Been leery of ANYTHING anywhere NEAR a bike sprocket ever since....

Wow. Close call buddy. Glad you are okay...just be more careful :)
Great story, Smitten. I know a rider whose tailbag of some sort got caught in her chain. Maybe it was one of the straps. Locked up her wheels on the freeway but she kept it up (M4d 5k33l5 Y0). I don't like anything flappy around my bike either. A scarf is right-out.
Let me tell you, I essentially made love to my backpack today I checked it so many times! Smooth riding.

Wow..pretty lucky i say. A few months ago my uncle was riding and slipped on oil dripping from a car's engine..he ended up low-siding, refused to let go of his bike, and his pinky ended up getting drilled by the chains. Not a pretty sight -_-...now with a half a pinky left. Anyways, glad youre ok.
this is a great example why i use a ventura rack on my bike with luggage/backpacks that are designed for it. yes its not cheap, but i have owned the dual 20 litre bags now over 13 years, done many hundred of thousands of kilometers with them and never had this happen.
