Engine Oil-Level

63915 Views 142 Replies 35 Participants Last post by  Giblet Plus!
Hi guys, just changed my oil and this is what the oil level is at currently. It's pretty much right at the upper level.
Is it safer to not fill it up to the upper level like I did? Just not 100% sure I've go the bike perfectly perpendicular to the ground.

How detrimental is it if you have a bit too much engine oil?

Based on the photo is this okay or is it too much?

I've also noticed tiny bubbles in the oil straight after a test ride. Is this normal?

Cheers

Bubbles are normal.

That's too much oil if your bike is standing perfectly straight. It should fill half the viewing window. It's not good for your engine to have that much oil.
It looks too full if you have it straight up, which is tricky. I would say drain some. I have done it and if you pull the drain real fast and put it back you wont lose much. Make sure you have some spare oil just in case.
Not that im a mechanic, but shouldn't the excess oil just burn off in use? Correct me if im wrong... But also I don't see how having a little too much oil is bad for the engine...
Looks like to much have you started the bike after filling/taking the picture? Run it for abit and reassess. Just losen the bolt abit to drain rather then pulling it out completely.

If you can balance the bike with your finger, it is vertical enough to check the oil. Leave your kick stand down. That's too much oil btw. Get some out. Yes it's bad on an engine.

From yahoo.
A little too much, no not a real problem.
If you fill drastically full you can cause undo stress on the oil pump and some seals. The real issue to avoid is not letting it back up in the cylinders, not because the engine will burn it but because liquid won't compress and will cause the engine to fail due to bent connecting rods.

This oil level is *PERFECT* dont touch it

read the owners manual. see on the side of the photo there is a small line @ the top & the bottom.

the upper is the *MAXIMUM* and you are almost on it. leave it. thats how mine is & has been after it came back from dealer for 1st service with 950 kiometers on the clock. i have 5200 kilometers on it, if it was going to detonate cos of too much oil it would have done so by now.

here is the owners manual

when you click the above link you will see page number about the middle of your web browser, put in page 96 & see for yourself

I don't remember the margin being that big. Looks like it is good.

Thank you all for your input.

Wow there seem to be many mixed reviews. Will make a decision tomorrow morning.

I first thought it would be okay since its right at the upper level.

Hmm don't know what to do. Maybe I'll drain out a tiny bit until it is at 3/4 of the markers. Would that be about 200ml? 6.7ounces?

I usually fill mine where its half way between half and full, and thats after letting oil fill the filter and then turning the bike off and letting it go back into the sump.

This.

On the side stand, I am able to see just a little bit of oil in the window.
1 more for being perfect. Leave it and enjoy the bike. After u ride it, it may seem like it is fuller, but that because of thermal expansion.
Hi Guys,

Just came back from riding the bike. All seems good! Will leave it as it is.

Thanks again everyone.

Yup, this too. You have the perfect amount when either you see a little in the window on the side stand or rear stand, but always remember for the a acurate reading. Read off all stands, straight up, after bike has been stopped for a couple min after warm up.
Didn`t know where to put this, but I just saved $2.00 a quart on Mobil 1 4T Motorcycle Oil!

I had a $20 gift card, so my total cost was $9.30 for 3 :)
