I'm brand new to bikes. I'm all about the break-in period; but 6th gear at 5k rpms is barely 50mph? Is this the same for you? This would pose a problem for highway riding during break-in right?

break in period is below 4k lol.. its less than 40mph..

owners manual says your going to kill the engine if you go over it.. Buy you can do as you wish, there is another thread on break in period on here.

no no i plan to stick to the break-in; first time on a road though and i was paying more attention to the road than the tach. below 40mph it is.

Thats the thing that sucks about the small CC bikes.. If I remember correctly on the Ninja 250R 4000rpm was less than 30mph.. Thats not even safe to be on the road with!

Personally I am just keeping it easy on my bike for break in.. Using 4000k as a stopping point but if I need to go over to pass a car or traffic is moving faster then I wont hesitate.. I dont want to be the cause of a problem for going to slow

If your all about the break in you may not want to follow the owners manual to the "T" only because they use a one size fits all break in for ALL their bikes.

Break in of engines occurs when the engines different parts goes through something called "heat cycles" meaning they heat up and cool down. when the parts heat up and cool down several times the engines parts begin to seat where they naturally go.

Following the owners manual will not hurt your engine, but its certainly not the best way to go about things...

What you need to do is vary your rpm's, keep it at different rmp levels for a certain period of time. then drop it. SO run it at 6k rpm then run it at 4.. then run it at 8.. then at 3..

The point is to let your engine heat up and cool down at different rpm levels. For the first 100 miles keep it under 8k rpm's, but after you can take it to 9-10.

Just do NOT keep it at one rpm range for too long, aka a 45 minute trip somewhere at the SAME rpm level.

Agree, I have a stretch of road out from my neighborhood, its 40 mph, about ten mins long, I plan on alternating runs between 20 and 40, down that road. Probably first 100 mi.

there is nothing that proves breaking in a engine by driving it slowly will prolong or ensure maximum potential. don't hesitate to go past 4000rpm. The bike isn't going to explode.

I basically rode mine like I stole it the day I got it.. I just tried not to go past 6000 for the first 200 miles. Idk if it was jut me but it seemed that for the first 150 miles or so first gear would be a biscuit to get out of... It would give this loud "chunk" and a lul, but now it seems to have gotten a lot smoother

Man I'm still at 150 miles. I'm just going to drive around small streets this weeken to put more miles.

Keeping it under 4k rpm was nearly impossible for me just on the ride home from the dealership....it's an unrealistic set of instructions to follow in my opinion. You would think that these "break in" requirements could be done at the manufacturer....do cars still require break in periods?

I only have 70 miles on this thing so far, and all I'm immediately surrounded by is 35mph stop-and-go roads. It's been pretty easy to stay under 4k for that reason alone. But yeah you're right... it's getting old; and there's no way i'm going to stick to the manual once i start commuting with it. It's just unsafe at that point.

Yeah 4k RPMs is about 37mph

I rode mine up to 8k regularly during break in, but generally kept RPMs as low as was reasonable. Took it near redline only a couple times. Did my first oil change at 600 miles and have been riding it a little harder since

My dealership told me not above 7k RPM, and at 100km/h it sits at 6500 RPM.
Not sure how you guys stay under 4k.

My dealership told me not above 10max but try keep it under 6k for the majority of the break in or at least till its done 1000kms. 6krpm is a little over 85km/h in 6th.

I completely understand. It's frustrating keeping the bike under 5 grand but I'm keeping to it for the most part. Varying RPM, and putting Mew through heat cycles, which I am told is just as important. And since I don't have much time to ride, even on the weekends, I only have about 150 on her now. LOL
