Talking 2017 Ninja 650

It's not a Ninja 300, but Kawasaki just introduced the all new Ninja 650.

48 lbs lighter
15mm lower seat height
6.8% better fuel economy
slipper clutch
gear indicator

The max power & redline will be down since it has 36mm throttle butterfly valve instead of 38mm(2016 model) to make it Euro 4 compliant.

Better looking and a lot lighter - win/win!

Don't underestimate that 48lb drop in weight. One of my riding buddies has a 2013 Ninja650, the weight and top-heaviness of it have really been turn-offs for me. This new model looks to be a huge improvement.

Definitely agree - i road a friends 09 650 and the biggest downside was the weight.

Wow - I didn't know about the weight reduction. That is the main reason I was looking at other bikes to upgrade to but this is huge news for me. I also love their new naked the N650 which is even 12lbs lighter than this and should be a competitor (not necessarily compete) with the FZ07.

Any idea how much down on power it is vs. the current model? (Damn those Nancy-Boy Euro 4 standards.)

I like what they've done with it, it was desperately needed, but if anything the bike needs a touch more power. Still though, I wouldn't kick it out of my garage.

Q. Why do I ride?
A. Because I've never seen anyone jogging and smiling.

The power will be down 3hp but they have managed to bring the torque up by 1.3lb-ft.
Bore, stroke, compression ratio, everything stays the same except smaller butterfly valve (36mm instead of 38mm) for throttle body.

2017 Ninja 650
67hp/8,000rpm
48.5lb-ft/?rpm

2016 Ninja 650
71hp/8,500rpm
47.2lb-ft/7,000rpm

Looks like the redline will be lowered to 10,000rpm from 11,000rpm.

The fuel economy has improved, however the fuel tank will be 1L smaller(15L tank instead of 16L) and gear ratio will stay identical to the previous generation.

*For a reference, the Ninja 300 has 17L Tank.

Looks like they finally got rid of ugly bar handle bar from 2016 model..
But if you look closely, it's basically still a one piece handle bar.

The lowered redline is what sucks the most on these new Euro 4 versions. It's just too sad that these choking strangled versions of new bikes will make their way over to the states because the makers are too cheap to give us free breathing versions.

Also, if you hate vibration, bars are better than cast clip-ons. The bars look just like what's on my Ninja 1000, and they transfer engine vibrations strongly while the Z1000 with the bars has no problem.

If they fixed anything on the 650, I hope it was that horrible direct-link rear shock. My old 09 650 was probably the worst handling bike I rode since the 80's.

The style looks nice, I'll give it that.

Is that an akrapovic?

Or is it only for the KRT edition? I swear i saw a video that claimed the 2017 got the akrapovic full system.

Akrapovic exhaust must be an option. Even the KRT does not come with it stock.

I believe Yamaha has factory Yoshimura option from dealer for R1(and other bikes?), Kawasaki has factory Akrapovic option for H2 so they might be extending that option to other bikes too.
