Attention - Password and Security Update

Hello all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

Does this mean passwords we've used here are compromised if they've been used for other web services?

This is always a concern if/when someone uses the same passwords across many platforms, as many people do (I'm totally guilty of this with my personal accounts). 'Hackers' crack in to the 'less important' accounts to gain access to the more important accounts. With the recent media site leaks, we're trying to be proactive about this as we take your security very seriously.

I think what he was asking, was if passwords from this site have been compromised.

Correct - This kinda thing happens, even if you've followed all steps for comprehensive security, there's no way around it. We just need to know if we should be changing passwords for any other websites that use the same (or part of the same) password as this forum.

Easy passwords like dictionary words plus numbers may have been cracked. It would never hurt to visit your other accounts and update the passwords there, just to be safe.

I'm sure you think this is a fabulous idea, and perhaps you think that this site needs to be protected as if it were a bank - and I'm sure you thought that it was great to make us sit through a commercial to be able to re-submit the form for our forgotten password.

Wrong.

Your grand scheme for security has made it so that this site's password needs to be unique from any of my other 24 or so needed passwords. Require a illegal character - oh great. Ten characters? Get a grip.

All you've done is made it a "for sure" that I will constantly forget my passwords and suffer your inane commercials "add infinitum". Take a clue from security passwords 101 - and scrap all of that and enable pass-phrases. They are infinitely more secure and easy to remember at the same time.

All this trouble and aggravation? No thanks. I'm outa here.

Hey there

I know complex passwords can be a PITA, however most browsers are equipped with saved passwords functions. Also, the forum itself has a "Remember Me" function you can use so you don't have to enter your password each time. There are also password managers you can use and keep track of all of your passwords.

As for passphrases, it was never said you couldn't use them here. In fact, many of our other communities have suggested just that. Try something along the lines of "BoiledCabbageIs#1" or "Ninja&Me4Ever". These both satisfy all the requirements.

In the future, we may revisit these requirements. At the moment, we are concentrating on getting everyone back in to their communities with their passwords reset.

If you're still unwilling to give this a go, shoot us a PM and we'll take care of your account.
