Gas tank cap, broken fuel gasket

Hello everybody.
I'm having some trouble with my gas tank on my ninja 2013 ABS. The other day, I noticed there were leaking fuel out of my fuel cap, quite substantional. I had filled my tank the other day, and figuered I must had filled to much. After cleaning and setting the bike up straight, it would start again after 15 minutes.

So I took a closer inspection and noticed that one of the fuel gaskets in the tank was broked, leading preasure out and draging fuel along with it. It's really a constant flow of gasoline from the tank.

Has anyone here had the same experiense? Will this be a good warranty case? And if not, is it possible to just get the gasket? I couldn't really find it online, just compete tank caps, and the oem's are pretty expensive.

Wow, that sucks. You sure it isn't related to changing the gas tank cap bolts right? If it isn't, then yes, the warranty should take care of that (although I would put the stock bolts if you have them on hand since it would be quicker to put them on than to argue with CS).

Regarding replacement parts, your right, there isn't a replacement available. You would have to replace the whole lock for 350$ which is certainly moronic. But they may very well have a generic replacement.

You can also go the aftermarket route in this case, since the hassle would justify the cost of the overpriced but really nice gas caps.

I can't see any reason with the new tank bolts, they are the same length and size. But i changed them back to the original ones now.
It must be the gasoline that damages the gasket. Should be a warranty case. Or else, i'll probably go for one of those you posted, they looked way better than the originals!

On a 2013 model, I will be shocked if they warranty a gasket. If you didn't buy the extended warranty, then it's way out of warranty anyway.

Come back and update us, I'm curious to know how Kawasaki handles it.

Oh yeah, that's right. It's a 2013. Since the OP asked if it would be covered under warranty, I assumed there was a valid warranty covering it to begin with. The normal warranty is a year so I can only imagine it's well past expired.

Regarding the bolts, I mention it because I had a custom gas cap made that didn't quite seal well between the bolts and the design, even though it should have worked in theory. The bolts are what pressure the seal, so if they weren't torqued correctly, combined with a defective or bent gasket from reinstallation, that may be an issue.

In that case I'd say go aftermarket and forget about it. It would probably be easiest since sourcing the gasket is going to take a lot of unnecessary time and effort. Might as well save it before you start.

There isn't done anything other than changing the bolts, and the preasure should have been just fine.

I live in Norway and here the kawasaki warranty is 5 years and I have until november17. I know its a gasket and they get hard over time, but its not supposed to brake after just 4 years. The law here states the same, that if you buy a product that is supposed to last longer that is has, should be covered. But thats only in very clear cases though... Waiting for a answer from kawa, it can take some time.

Wow! Why? Is it a Kawasaki thing, or a country law? Is the bike much more expensive? Just curious, you caught me off guard there.

It is 5 year from kawasaki here. It's pretty comon here, almost all cars have it too. The law helps you alot to, like the iPhone warranty is one year, but the goverment has a consumer help center and they can help you argue your case, if it breaks down before it "should".

Brand new, a 2017 is around 10k$, but taxes on all vehicles are very high here. So i'm not shore how much of it that comes from taxes and how much come from kawasaki. But then again, average salaries here are 60k$ a year before tax. What is the price in the US?

Is that $10k NOK? If so, that's a bargain! If it's Euros, then ouch.

My 2013 was $5350 including the taxes and all fees. That was with the standard factory 1 year warranty. I opted to extend the warranty to 5 years for another $520. Total: $5870 USD (or $51016 NOK).

haha, today they call it democratic socialism. I would have sworn that used to be called inflation

Thanks for that info, Efros. Interesting. I suppose NOK is the currency? In any case taking a look I presume where you say 10k$ you mean a rough equivalent to US dollars, so about 40% more than what our bikes cost. In that case your paying way more than enough to justify that 5 year warranty. Euros and USD are pretty head on these days so that wouldn't be that big of a difference. Long gone are the days of 1.5 exchange rate... . I used to live in Spain so yeah, I am familiar with how Europe treats warranties very differently. After living in the USA I'm not sure it's for the best anymore, but oh well. I'm more of a free market and let the consumer decide type of guy.

Anyway, than the warranty should cover it. Let us know if it does just out of curiosity.
